Johannesburg

Johannesburg, also known as Jozi or Jo’burg, is the largest city in South Africa. It is located in South Africa’s Gauteng Province and is served by the busy O.R Tambo International Airport.

2010 Soccer World Cup matches in Johannesburg will be played at the upgraded Soccer City Stadium. This flagship stadium has a seating capacity of 80 000 to 94 700 and is set to host both the opening and final match of the tournament.

Ellis Park Stadium, in the heart of Johannesburg, will also be a venue for five first round matches, a second round match as well as a quarterfinal.

Pretoria

Pretoria is one of South Africa’s three capital cities, serving as the administrative capital. It is located 50 km north of Johannesburg in the country’s Gauteng Province.

Pretoria’s soccer venue for the 2010 World Cup is the Loftus Versfeld Staduim, which can hold up to 50 000 spectators. It is the most established of the 2010 World Cup venues, dating all the way back to 1916.

Cape Town

The Mother City is known to be one of South Africa’s most scenic cities lying in the shadow of Table Mountain overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The recently upgraded Green Point Stadium will host all matches played in Cape Town and has a capacity of around 70 000.

Durban

Durban, located in Kwa-Zulu Natal, is a major centre of tourism in South Africa mainly due to the regions warm subtropical climate and sandy white beaches. The Moses Mabhida Stadium was especially built for the 2010 World Cup matches that will be played in Durban. The massive modern stadium, which took 32 months to complete has a seating capacity of 70 000 and will host six first-round matches, one second-round, and one semi-final match.

“The City of Roses” or Bloemfontein is the capital city of the Free State Province. The Bloemfontein Airport makes the town easily accessible by plane if the 390km drive from Johannesburg seems too daunting. The Free State Stadium will be the venue for 5 first round matches and 1 second round match and has a capacity of around 48 000.

This city, often referred to as the Windy City or simply P.E, is one of the 2010 World Cup host cities that required a brand new venue to be built. The recently completed Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium has a capacity of 50 000 and its eye-catching roof was built to withstand the high-speed winds that the area is known for. It is located close to P.E’s beautiful beaches and many attractions.

Rustenburg

Rustenburg lies in the heart of the savannah bushveld around 112km northwest of Johannesburg. The Royal Bafokeng Stadium just outside this city will host a number of first and second round matches. The 42 000-seater stadium was built in 1999 and is well-equipped after it had to undergo some minor renovations to bring it up to standard. It is located close to some of South Africa’s best game park including Pilansberg Game Reserve and the famous holiday resort of Sun City.

Nelspruit is the capital of the Mpumalanga Province and lies 330km east of Johannesburg, close to the famous Kruger National Park. The city is served by two airports - Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and the Nelspruit Airport. The brand new Mbombela Stadium was erected just outside Nelspruit for the 2010 World Cup and has a capacity of 40,000.

Polokwane, meaning Place of Safety, is the capital of the Limpopo Province. It is described as a vibrant, busy and colourful wonderland in a sea of grasslands and surrounded by scenic mountains. It is ideally situated close to some of South Africa best game reserve including the renowned Kruger National Park.
 
Polokwane’s new venue for the 2010 World Cup, The Peter Mokaba Stadium, is situated approximately 5km from the Polokwane city centre and offers a gross seating capacity of 45,000.
